bloggerCon Shanghai
had some connectivity problems. The hook up with Ha-ha-harvard didn’t
work and, more annoyingly, neither did the wireless for most of the
laptops in the room. Nevertheless, a fun event, very informal and
unpretentious. Fons Tuinstra, Jian Guo Deng, Issac Mao, Hong Zhir Mao, Maria Trombly, Matthew Schwartz, Michael Ohisson, Bill Crampton
and a bunch of other folks to link to when I get a decent connection
again. Fons and Issac led some of the evening discussion, talking about
various aspects of the government’s blog blocking. Lots of back and
forth on that, with a sprinkling of the usual deflationary “What a
bunch of self-important egomaniacs!” comments to keep things grounded.
Best part of the evening was just hanging out and making connections.
Fons (a Dutchman!) will be in S.F. for the Berkeley journalism
conference in April (China’s Digital Future),
and Issac may be there too. Issac and Jian Guo have agreed to help a
little on exploring Chinese character support with Userland
products. (Thank you for your interest, Scott and Jake. The market,
BTW, is pretty big, eh? Issac estimates 300,000 PRC blogs already. It
would be a hoot to type this posting’s title in Chinese.) And the
three of us will keep in touch about school to school connections
between China and the US. A fine ending to a great trip. I’ll be back
here soon.
